Microscopic Diatom Arrangements by California Academy of Sciences

California Academy of Sciences photographs beautifully arranged diatoms on microscope slides. Scale bars in photos of this set represent 100 µm.

Diatoms are golden brown algae (class Bacillariophyceae). Diatoms are ideal objects for testing the resolution of a compound microscope.



Making a simple arranged diatom slide is actually not difficult, but it will takes time. With the proper set of tools and a certain amount of patience and perseverance, it can be achieved fairly quickly.
